The Global Warming crowd tells us that the temperature of the Earth is rising every year because they actually go out and measure it.  How many times have you heard "Last year was the hottest on record"? They claim they have the proof.

Let's look into how they are actually measuring these temperatures. Or to be more specific where they are measuring them.  NOAA - The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration states that temperature monitoring stations must be placed certain distances away from any heat producing devices. Generally that distance is 100 feet. NOAA's temperature sensor guidelines can be found HERE.

But these NOAA regulations are NOT being followed and temperature stations are being placed ridiculously close to high heat producing devices such as air conditioning units, exhaust fans, trash burning drums, barbecue grills, sewage treatment plants, airplane engines, tennis courts, and other hot places that are SPECIFICALLY warned against placing the sensors near.

NOAA's rules specifically state that temperature sensors should not be placed within 100 feet of buildings, concrete, or asphalt parking lots, and certainly not in the vicinity of any heat producing devices such as air conditioners or hot air vents.

Even the National Weather Service is not following the rules as the where these temperature monitoring stations are to be placed.  If THEY aren't following the rules how would we expect others to as well?

Here are where the official temperature reading sensors at the Eureka, CA. National Weather Service Office are placed.

There are literally hundreds of temperature monitoring stations that are in places that give higher temperature readings than the surrounding area would normally have if they were properly placed.

This sensor is 9 feet away from a very hot air conditioner.	This sensor is just a few away from another air conditioner.	This temperature sensor is directly in the path of a super hot jet engine.

The National Weather Service has established standards for equipment, siting, and exposure.
This is the quote from their rule book:

"Temperature sensor siting: The sensor should be mounted 5 feet +/- 1 foot above the ground. 
The ground over which the shelter [radiation] is located should be typical of the surrounding area. A level, open clearing is desirable so the thermometers are freely ventilated by air flow. 

Do not install the sensor on a steep slope or in a sheltered hollow unless it is typical of the area or unless data from that type of site are desired. When possible, the shelter should be no closer than four times the height of any obstruction (tree, fence, building, etc.). 
The sensor should be at least 100 feet from any paved or concrete surface."

Clearly, these rules are not being followed. If that is the case how can these temperature readings be considered accurate?

This sensor is less than 10 feet from a hot air conditioner exhaust, a car exhaust and the asphalt pavement!

EVERY ONE of these temperature stations are placed in areas too close to heat producing devices according to the rules set by NOAA.  Yet this is where the "OFFICIAL" data is being collected that they claim "proves" Global Warming is occurring.

Detroit Lakes, Minnesota

This picture is from the "official" climate station in Detroit Lakes MN. This station is located right behind a building. These temperature records are recorded by a man named Don Kostuch who gathers up almost all the temperature readings for the entire state of Minnesota!  This is the data given to both NASA and NOAA from which they issue their official temperature reports.

How can this "official" temperature sensor POSSIBLY get an accurate reading after being placed so close to the outputs of two very large air conditioner exhausts?

The records from this station claimed that 1998-2006 were the hottest years on record. 
Isn't it interesting that this temperature sensor was moved right next to these two air conditioner units on that year?

NASA has just recently corrected itself about when the hottest years on record were.  According to the new corrected data published by NASA, 1998 was no longer the hottest year ever. 1934 was!

Four of the top 10 years of US CONUS high temperature deviations are now from the 1930s: 1934, 1931, 1938 and 1939, while only 3 of the top 10 are from the last 10 years (1998, 2006, 1999). Several years (2000, 2002, 2003, 2004) fell well below the leader board, behind even 1900.
In a recent Global Warming scare story by Newsweek they completely ignored this new data!

If the Global warming crowd is basing their arguments on fraction of degree increases, and the data given to them was off, even by one degree, how can their argument possibly stand up?
If they ignore this data, and they do, their "computer models" of  "Global Warming" MUST be wrong!

AL Gore uses a phony computer "model", based upon the OLD temperature readings, and then he has the nerve to exaggerate it's effect by 20 times!  Al Gores "science" is truly laughable.

One of the most obscenely flagrant violations examples of the temperature monitoring station rules can be seen in Tucson, AZ at the University of Arizona where the sensor is placed directly on a heat reflecting asphalt parking lot.  Yet this is one of the places where they contend the greatest rise in temperature has occurred!  These pictures say it all.

How about the official temperature gauges in Lewiston Maine?  They are too close to the pavement, the stone steps, the air conditioning unit, and even a barbecue grill!

How about this sensor in Forest Grove, Oregon? The picture below is from Oregon State Climatologist George Taylor.  You may have heard of him because the Governor of Oregon tried to get him fired for not jumping on to the global warming bandwagon because he didn't see enough supporting evidence.

There's literally hundreds of "official" temperature gathering stations in places where they should not be.  I may even have to start a new web page just to show them all.

I thought this one was particularly humorous.  Besides being too close to a structure (a private home no less!), a vehicle's exhaust, and a heat radiating asphalt street, I wonder how accurate the data is after the sensor has been whacked by an errant basketball a few hundred times?!!!

This folks, is the OFFICIAL SCIENTIFIC DATA that Al Gore uses to predict the worlds catastrophic end!  Be afraid, be VERY afraid of AL GORE!

Cambridge, MA - A review of more than 200 climate studies led by researchers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics has determined that the 20th century is neither the warmest century nor the century with the most extreme weather of the past 1000 years.

The review also confirmed that the Medieval Warm Period of 800 to 1300 A.D. and the Little Ice Age of 1300 to 1900 A.D. were worldwide phenomena not limited to the European and North American continents. 

"While 20th century temperatures are much higher than in the Little Ice Age period, many parts of the world show the medieval warmth to be greater than that of the 20th century."
